The UN Reports a Decrease in Syrian Refugees, from 2003-2013


The UN Refugee data reports a decreased amount of refugees leaving Syria.  Starting in the year of 2003, a total of 2, 248, 919 refugees left Syria and sought refuge in different countries.  In 2011, the year of which the Syrian War started, only 924, 650 Syrian refugees were helped by the UN; then total amount of refugee decreased in 2012 to 735, 304 and in 2013 to 248, 214.
 
The data on refugees recorded by the UN may be skewed and incorrect.  Since the Syrian War, there has been an increase of refugees fleeing Syria and seeking refuge across Europe and around the world.  Certain countries in Europe had to take steps to not take-in and accept any refugees in their countries for security measures and due to the amount of refugees they already acquired.  Data collected by the UN may be skewed and incorrect due to an increase of undocumented and unregistered refugees.  With the state of the war, Syrian refugees and citizens may have done anything and everything to leave their country.  However, according to an article written by Mona Charlabi in The Guardian, Charlabi stated that “the UN expects by the end of 2013 there will be 3.5 million Syrian refugees…”  Although, Charlabi had also used a different data set provided in the article, the data she reported on does not match up or coincide with the data provided by the UN website.

    Great work Lawrence. I really enjoy this topic, and I like how you covered all your bases to put your findings in the appropriate context. I will be very interested to see the conclusions you draw from the research you conduct. It's also very refreshing to see someone address issues that go beyond our own backyard.

    Your findings were very surprising to me. I would have assumed that the refugee count leaving Syria had increased over the years, especially due to the large news coverage about it recently. It is very sad that the amount of Syrian refugees that were helped by the UN has decreased, because it makes me think our world is moving backwards not forwards. I think it is important that you address the fact that the data may be skewed and incorrect though. Overall, you bring light to a very important topic, and I look forward to seeing this information visualized.

    The Inconvenient Truths of the UN Refugee "data". An absolute fiasco.
    Kudos for taking this on: the secrets, lies and distortions concerning Syria are plentiful.

    Endless imperial wars, Afghanistan, Yemen, Libya, Iraq, Syria etc etc, no wait, "humanitarian" wars. Thanks deep state!

    The Guardian article is another attempt to "manufacture consent" for regime change.
